A ugust 3 1 , 1 9 9 4 • T he P ortland O bserver P age B 8 At The Fair With Drug Free Marshals T he Drug Free Marshals of the Portland area increased their ranks by over 150 kids during participation in the 10th annual Hawthorne Street Fair last weekend. The cam paign is part o f the national anti-drug program . Lead the Way to a D rug Free USA, sp o n so re d by th e C h u rc h o f Scientology, and is centered on getting children and teens to take an oath to rem ain d rug-free and to help friends and fam ily stay drug-free as w ell. The program , active in cities th roughout the U .S., has already sw orn in over 1,500 c h ild re n as D rug Free M arshals. At the H aw thorne Street Fair, local m arshals asked passers-by if they w ould like to take the M arshal prom ise. A fter officially sw earing to uphold each o f the seven points o f the D rug Free M arsh a l p le d g e , p a rtic ip a n ts sig n e d th e ir n am e and w ere badged with their official Drug Free M arshal star. The m arshals w ere a big sue- cess am ongst adults and children alike Kids and adults ranging from 2 to 75 years-old w anted to their support the cam paign by taking the pled g e and sp o rtin g th e ir badges throughout the rest o f the fair. Angie M ann, spokesperson for the m arshals, stated, “ It re ally m eans som ething to these kids to becom e Drug Free M ar shals. They w ear their badges with pride and no longer feel in h ib ited ab o u t say in g no to drugs. You know you have a suc cessful cam paign when 6 and 16 year-olds w ill say, No w ay: I ’m a Drug Free M arshall!” ’ Portland area M arshals hold frequent ev e n ts around tow n, sw earing in com m unity leaders and law enforcem ent agencies or talking with other groups o f kids about what th e y ’ve learned about drugs. Jazz Concerts At The Old Church The Old Church proudly pre sents its Sunday Jazz concert season. The six-week series starts Oct. 9, 1994 and continues every Sunday through Nov. 13 . Sunday Jazz series provides Portlanders with a refresh ingly new musical format for Sun day afternoon. The premier Fall concert is Sun day, Oct. 9, 1994 with the swinging style and warm tones o f The Re becca Kilgore Quintet. The follow ing Sunday, Oct. 16 presents the talented Russian jazz artist Andrei Kitaev & Friends, Sunday, Oct. 30 features Dan Balmer on guitar with Extensions; Sunday, November 6 Dan Faehnle with guitar and Friends, and wrapping up the fall concert Sunday, Nov. 13 is Nola Jean Bogel and Trio. Peyton Award The highlight o f the Metropoli tan Human Rights Commission Hu man Rights Award Dinner will be the presentation o f the Russell A. Peyton Award to the Rev. Rodney Page, Executive Director of Ecu menical Ministries o f Oregon. The Rev. Page has been an outspoken advocate for social justice and hu- man rights for all people. He has led Ecumenical Ministries through an unprecedented period of growth and established its reputation as a coura geous organization unafraid to tackle controversial issues The featured speaker for the dinner will be Donna Redwing, citizen activist, commu- n ity organ izer and former director of QSw Moving ©f the Lesbian C om m unity Project Ms. R edw ing has spent the last year in New York as the director o f the Gay and Lesbian A lliance A gainst D efam ation (GLAAD).
